Ok, some of you may be concerned - "what is Sal on at the moment, writing about unicorns." Please stay with me and you will see where I am going with this.
Last week at the launch of the beautiful Perfect Potion Café collection, I had the pleasure of speaking with someone who was fascinated with magic. She loved the way I crafted all the beautiful Perfect Potion blends and asked me ‘so Sal, what would a blend for a unicorn smell like’. My initial reaction for a split second was, ‘really, why can’t I be asked a more serious question’, but I soon realised it was a serious and we ended up talking about the mythology and symbolism of a unicorn. I explained these stories and themes that we assign to a unicorn can be used to help us create an aromatherapy blend with all the attributes that we associate with a unicorn.
Unicorns hold an amazingly unique place in mythology and symbolism, capturing imaginations across all cultures and time. Did you know that the unicorn is also the official national animal of Scotland?
The unicorn is a symbol of purity, magic, innocence and power, it is the most magical of all the mythical animals and is often depicted as a pristine white creature, representing purity and innocence.
It is no wonder that the question took me back to my childhood. Children believe in magic and the unicorn can spark a child’s imagination and sense of wonder. The unicorn also symbolises hope, joy, and the possibility of miracles. The unicorn is usually portrayed as a kind and gentle creature, offering reassurance and comfort. The unicorn’s horn symbolises individuality and power to be oneself. It is no wonder that the unicorn serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary possibilities that life offers and encourages us to embrace our uniqueness.
Unicorns remind us of our own inner power, our soul purpose and the magic that is within every one of us. They enhance our belief in a magical world where things we dream can really happen. If we are struggling or going through tough times, the unicorn will remind us not to give up on our dreams and that each challenging experience is only temporary.
The unicorn serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary possibilities that life holds and gives us the ability to see everything around us without judgement, to bring acceptance for situations as they unfold.
In other words, by embracing the qualities of unicorns we discover the magic that abounds and they may even help us open the door to our soul. This sounds like something Susanne Fischer-Rizzi once said about essential oils:
Getting to know these heavenly scents is something like falling in love. They will touch your heart, make you keenly aware of the beauty surrounding you, and open the door to your soul. Suddenly, every facet of your life will seem touched by magic.
So now it is time to create some special unicorn magic. Our unicorn blend will promote feelings of grace, purity, hope and positivity, healing, courage and uniqueness, while encouraging a sense of wonder and awe. The first thing I do is list all the attributes of the unicorn and some of the oils that are likely to embody these attributes:
- Grace and purity – lavender, neroli, rose
- Healing power – German chamomile, lavender, frankincense
- Hope and positivity – bergamot, sweet orange
- Magic – frankincense, fragonia
- Strength and courage – cardamom, ginger, atlas cedarwood
- Uniqueness – patchouli, angelica root, ylang ylang
- Kindness and gentleness – lavender, neroli, sandalwood
Blend recipe
Now I am ready to create my blend, but remember that you can adjust the number of drops of each oil to personalise the blend to your preference.
- 1 drop Neroli
- 2 drops Bergamot
- 2 drops Sweet Orange
- 3 drops Lavender
- 3 drops Frankincense
- 1 drop Ginger
- 3 drops Fragonia
- 2 drop Atlas Cedarwood
- 2 drop Patchouli
And as an addition if you can get it:
- 1 drop angelica root (this may be hard to get hold of, but it truly is angelic)
Add this to 10 ml of jojoba oil and use in a glass roller ball bottle or add 5 drops of this blend to a diffuser.
As Susanne Fischer-Rizzi reminds us, enjoy the magic of essential oils, let them inspire your inner child and remind you that magic is real!
