Honouring Mother Earth: Beyond Sustainability, Towards Sacred Connection

It's not merely about environmental stewardship or carbon footprint reduction; it's about fundamentally shifting our relationship with the planet, acknowledging the sacredness of nature and realising that we are not custodians of nature, but we are nature.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly wisely proclaimed April 22nd as International Mother Earth Day, a reminder that our planet and its ecosystems are our shared home. This day underscores the critical need to foster harmony with nature, balancing economic, social and environmental considerations for both present and future generations.

The spirit of International Mother Earth Day, which emphasises global awareness of environmental challenges, deeply resonated in the creation of our Mother Earth Blend. However, in 2025, we recognise that the Western understanding of "Mother Earth" often falls short of the profound connection held by indigenous peoples worldwide. It's not merely about environmental stewardship or carbon footprint reduction; it's about fundamentally shifting our relationship with the planet, acknowledging the sacredness of nature and realising that we are not custodians of nature, but we are nature.

In an increasingly digitised and disconnected world, the yearning for a tangible connection with nature is more profound than ever. Aromatherapy, with its ability to evoke powerful sensory experiences, offers a pathway to rekindle this ancient bond and reconnect with nature. The scents of essential oils can trigger deep, spiritual connections, mirroring the profound relationship our ancestors and indigenous cultures have always maintained with the natural world.

As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the call to "re-shamanise" aromatherapy, as discussed in my book, The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, Vol III – Psyche and Subtle, becomes even more relevant. In this chapter, I highlight the profound wisdom of Johanna Lambert, editor of Wise Women of Dreamtime – Aboriginal Tales of the Ancestral Past. Her insights emphasise the vital role of empowering the feminine principle in restoring our connection with the earth.

This wisdom is repeated in Vandana Shiva’s classic 1988 book Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Survival in India, who states that women and nature have been the victims of male-dominated patriarchal society, and it is only through the recovery of the feminine principle that we can embrace the sacredness of nature.

My personal expression of these values is embodied in the Mother Earth Blend, a unique synergy of cardamom, geranium, sweet orange, rose absolute, patchouli, and vetiver. This blend is designed to evoke a sense of harmony and balance with nature, reminding us of the feminine, nurturing essence of "Mother Earth." The rich, warm, floral, and earthy notes create a sensory experience that fosters a profound reconnection with the natural world.

In 2025, let us move beyond mere sustainability and embrace a deeper, more sacred connection with our planet. Let us honour Mother Earth not just on April 22nd, but every day, by recognising our interconnectedness and fostering a relationship of respect and reverence.

What is in the blend

Rose absolute is the heart and soul of this blend. It embodies the divine feminine, the quintessential qualities of ‘Mother Earth’.

When we feel burdened with despair and a sense that humankind is not doing enough to protect Mother Earth, the warm, invigorating, spicy aroma of cardamom gives us the courage and confidence to be responsible custodians of Mother Earth.
Delightful sweet orange reminds us that Mother Earth is vibrant and abundant

Geranium promotes harmony and balance as well as feminine nurturing qualities

Grounding qualities are promoted with patchouli, which also helps to heal the common disconnect from our body and nature
Vetiver is used to help allow us to experience a deep connection with all life.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share with you Mother Earth blend. As you envelop yourself with the scent of Mother Earth, I hope that you feel one with nature.
